The Caribbean reefs were once composed mainly of massive Elkhorn coral formations. Some are left but most are trying to re-establish themselves. The small mass of Fire coral behind this Elkhorn is labeled MC ( mustard coral) learn to identify it and give yourself more distance from it than any other coral. Scraping against the mustard or 'fire' coral causes severe burns ( like jellyfish stings) and can even be life threatening to some who have an allergic reaction). Stay away from ALL corals. You can look but not touch!
Snorkelers tend to get in trouble with corals when there are waves that may cause you to loose control and touch the coral. When snorkeling in wavy conditions, remind yourself to give greater bearth than usual. |
