| Photos Elena There are manatees that roam between the islands east of Puerto Rico. They may be seen on the reefs of Icacos, Lobos ( this young manatee was on a Lobos reef) Vieques. They are seen frequently around the Isleta Marina, in fact some of the boat people feed them lettuce there. However, if you were to search for one any particular day you will most likely be dissapointed as sightings are few and far between. This manatee may have been sleeping as it stayed still for a long time then seemed to suddenly notice us and swam away quickly. The fishermen say that they may see a particular manatee around them that stays near, but never close. They are not 'friendly' and you should not touch them, you could get a very nasty slap. Notice the remora holding on in the photo below. |
