From the waterfront, 'Malecon', in Esperanza, Vieques it is just a short paddle out to Cayo Afuera where you can beach your kayaks and snorkel on either side of the island. The rocks shown above are on the western side.

Should the weather be very calm you might kayak around the outside of the island, if you're lucky you may see the white tailed tropic birds that reside in the outer cliffs.

Monte Pirata, the highest point in Vieques, is in the background and Esperanza is just to the right.

The easiest budget way to stay one or a few nights in Vieques, without a vehicle, is in Esperanza. You can walk to everything (except the finest beaches).

Esperanza Waterfront, South Coast: Right by the 'Malecon' (waterfront) in Esperanza . Prices start at $70. plus tax with AC:

Trade Winds Tel. 8666, Bananas Tel. 8700, Amapola . . . all face the Malecon with easy swimming and 'night life' at your doorstep.

Alta Vista Tel. 3296, Pablos Tel. 8917, Casa de Kathy Tel. 3352, Casa Coral Tel. 1967, and Mi Pana Tel. 787-874-6221 are just a few blocks away, relatively more quiet, in a residential neighborhood.

Warning about petty theft and US Fish & Wildlife heavy fines. Take no valuables to the beach.
