| One curious thing about a school of Blue Tang is the other fish swimming amongst them, seeking "anonymity" in the crowd! Parrot Fish and other reef fish blend in with them, hiding from their predators, but not from us! |

We don't spend a lot of time on the boat, just get to our destination and jump off. Photos of the Sea Fans we will see.
Puffer fish are really cute, usually very shy, but a few of them are used to us.
These beautiful reefs of Vieques can only be reached by boat. Few visitors get to see them! Calm clear water on the leeward side.
Triton Trumpet Shell, Queen Conch Shells ( quickly returned to the sea)
By now, we have snorkeled enough to work up a hearty appetite, as we head into the calm, clear waters of a protected beach for a picnic lunch. There is a lovely little reef here and the perfect opportunity for beginners to enjoy a relaxed snorkel and more instruction from our guides.
After lunch and relaxation at the beach, we head out to another great snorkeling spot. The water is clear tuquoise and calm, white sand beaches in the background.

e-mail: <biobaynights@hotmail.com> Please state clearly whether you want the Vieques Snorkeling Trip.
*** By the way, Pleasae Note: you CAN NOT motorboat from Fajardo to Vieques!
This trip is NOT recommended to do from San Juan to Vieques as a day trip. If you on mainland Puerto Rico better to go out on the Fajardo trip.
About Ecotourism: I strongly believe in the idea of eco tourism which, in its' true form, means helping local people learn to protect their own environment instead of exploiting it. Translation: The fishermen are learning to conserve their reefs instead of over fishing them, because they can profit from showing them to tourists. So, therefore, I ONLY use local fishermen for all the boat trips. These guys know these waters so much better, they are 5th generation fishermen! Elena

Offshore reef, South coast of Vieques May, 2007. Photo: Elena. Please be careful to NEVER touch any coral.
Due to alarming declines, the Fisheries Service has protected elkhorn and staghorn corals under the Endangered Species Act.
Habitat destruction is threatening the corals' survival, and documented increases in water temperatures are a threat to that habitat. . . . last year these corals became the first species actually protected under the Act due to global warming.
Once the dominant reef-building corals in Florida and the Caribbean, elkhorn and staghorn corals have almost entirely disappeared.

We visit this reef on our trip and always see the schools of Blue Tang pictured here. Photo: May 2007, South coast of Vieques.
